5 Reasons to Become a Makeup Minimalist

BY ALEXANDRA PHILLIPS

The different stages of going makeup-free can also be told as a bad breakup. First, you want them back, then you realize you're better off without them. Next comes the self-doubting period where you feel like your not ready or good enough to go out into the world. Finally, comes the self-acceptance and realization that you are beautiful just the way you are. Here are five reasons to convince you to go makeup-free: 1) You won’t melt your face offAll you need is sunscreen and a little bit of lip balm. I’ve been told time and time again that sunscreen will save my future skin and keep me looking younger. If you want to stay looking young for a bit longer and avoid those inevitable wrinkles, then sunscreen is your new best friend. You need it on the daily if you want to fight anti-aging.For a list of the best sunscreens in 2018 check out this link: https://www.allure.com/gallery/best-sunscreens-for-summer  2) Clear up your acneEmbrace those pimples! Yes, it might be a daunting task, but leave those little suckers alone and you might find them to disappear faster than they usually do. If you're not blocking them with layers of foundations and powders, then your skin can actually breathe and your face will thank you for it. It might be hard to not cover up those imperfections, but just remember that there is nothing wrong with pimples and a flawless face is a construction made by society. Acne is not ugly, the ugliness comes from the people in society who comment on someone's appearance because it does not fit the look of a perfect Instagram picture.  3) Test your self-confidence.When I first started to wear makeup I became so accustomed to wearing mascara and concealer every day, I felt naked when I went out into public and there was nothing on my face. I felt like people were looking at me because I looked tired or sick. It’s silly, but it’s true. I really learned to embrace myself in this period and become confident with my no-makeup self.  4) Save timeWake up, wash your face, moisturize, and always, always use sunscreen. Think of all the time you will save in the morning!  5) Save moneyThe amount of money I have spent in Sephora or shoppers is actually shocking. I look at all those Sephora beauty points and sometimes have to do a double take because I cannot believe I actually spent all of that money. If you decide to become a makeup minimalist, you might find yourself saving more and more money. So try taking a break from the cake and by cake, I mean all that foundation. Summer gives you the perfect chance to lay back and just live in your skin. Don’t get me wrong there is nothing wrong with foundation, eyeshadow, concealer, etc, but all that makeup isn’t benefiting your skin. Test your self-confidence, give your wallet a break, and let your face breathe. However, if you do want to add a little bit of makeup to keep that natural glow, then check out RMS, Ilia, Tata Harper or Josie Maran.
