Dress Like It's 1999

From scrunchies to nostalgic TV shows these are all the elements of making your 21st century a little more 90s.

If you're feeling nostalgic for the 90s, here are some outfits and shows to put you in the 90s vibe. My list could go on and on, but for now, I’ll limit the selection to a few 90s throwbacks to inspire you for today.

Accessories:

Let's start with Scrunchies: I can’t remember the last time I used a regular hair tie, because I have been so attached to wearing scrunchies. They are so gentle on my hair, and they look super cute. Plus if you're in a rush or questioning what to wear that day, you can just wear a simple outfit, and use a colorful scrunchie to pull everything together.

Next, sunglasses. This could be an easier route to achieving the 90s look. Just grab a pair of round, small round, or cat-eye sunglasses, and you're ready to go!

Now onto chain belts: I’ve seen a recent uprising of chain belts. I’m talking about the kind of belt that hangs off in layers on the side of your body. I. AM. GIA has been a major fashion brand for the casual grunge look. Their cobin pants and pixie coats have taken over mainstream millennial fashion. The cobin pants feature a chain that hangs off the side, a look that is perfect for a cute 90s vibe.

And we can't forget your feet and platform shoes. This item is perfect for all the shorter gals, like me. There are so many companies who are introducing platform versions of their original designs. Companies such as Superga, Adidas, Nike, Converse, and Dr. Martens. This accessory will give you a little height, and an element reminiscent of the 90s.

Last but not least, there is the classic white sneaker. The white sneaker has been a trend in circulation for quite some time now, so this could be a starting point if you want to achieve the 90s look. Some good go-to brands are Adidas, Fila, and Nike.

Clothes:

I get most of my inspiration from TV shows and movies like Friends, Clueless, Gilmore Girls, Charmed, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Full House, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. All these shows bring me back to a time where life seemed simple without the distraction of technology, and I love that! These shows/movies have created some iconic fashion characters such as Rachel Green from Friends, and Cher from Clueless. Even if you have never seen any of these shows, go to Pinterest and see the epic pins created that take inspo from these characters.

An inspiration that includes high waisted mom jeans. If watching friends has taught me anything, it's that you can never go wrong with a good pair of Levi’s and a white T-shirt!

Let’s move onto matching plaid sets: this look might be a bit bolder in today’s culture, but it is 90s worthy. If you don’t want to go full Cher Horowitz, then going half plaid would work too!

Now, I’m going to take it back to the iconic picture of Dwayne Johnson and his black turtleneck. This look is great for any girls or guys out there who want to bring back the turtleneck. plus it’s a super cute winter staple.

The next item up, or I should say fabric, is velvet: a velvet slip dress with a white t-shirt underneath is a great look that can easily be dressed up or down.

If your looking to embrace the 90s look and don’t want to hurt your wallet, I recommend thrift shopping! There are so many thrift stores in Kingston worthy of your time. Check out What I Wear, Talize Thrift store, and Value Village. If you don’t have time to thrift in store, or if online shopping is more your thing, then check out Threaded Fashion and Losers Weepers Vintage.
