5 Things You Must Watch, Read, or Listen to this Reading Week

If you’re like me, this semester has been one never-ending to-do list and you’ve somehow managed to stay on top of all your readings —but, have fallen miserably behind on the latest entertainment as a consequence. Season 2 of Sex Education? I’m on episode 3. Cheer? It’s waiting patiently in my queue.

Luckily, MUSE has rounded up our suggestions for the best of entertainment this season. If you’re unsure how to fill the hours of a long flight or pass an afternoon at home, check out our recommendations below:

The Must Watch TV

The Magicians (available on syfy)

“I’ll start off by apologizing because this one isn’t on Netflix, but trust me it’s worth it! The Magicians is a fantasy drama, based on a book series of the same name. It follows the story of Quentin Coldwater, a young man who is recruited into a secret school for magic (I know what you’re thinking, but hear me out.) The show deals with mental health and sexuality, and actively subverts the hero trope. Featuring a diverse cast, stunning cinematography, and some of the best writing on the small screen! Also Season 5 just began, so it’s a great time to dive into the series whilst having new material to look forward to. Thank me later.”

The Bachelor

“As someone who has never actually been into reality TV beyond the occasional sleepover-Jersey-Shore-binge, I am a new convert to The Bachelor. What had started as a fun thing to watch with my housemates has transformed into an all-out obsession. ChampagneGate? Hannah Ann being given a mild villain edit? Mykenna's crying? All of it makes for a wonderful cluster of reality TV, and I cannot get enough. Tune in every Monday, or rip it from Project Free TV.”

The Buzzworthy Book

To Shake the Sleeping Self

“To Shake the Sleeping Self is a wonderfully honest and raw memoir that grapples with the question: What makes a life worth living? In an attempt to answer the tedious question, Jedidiah Jenkins embarks on a cycling journey from Oregon to Patagonia. Starting on the eve of his 30th birthday, he leaves his life as a lawyer behind and begins the search for answers. This memoir is for the adventurer in all of us and acts as a reminder not to let people funnel you into a life you don’t want to live.”

The Throw-Back Movie

Before Sunrise

“Sometimes I remember there are people who never watched the masterpiece that is Before Sunrise, and I feel so bad for them. The 1995 film lacks the special effects and elaborate action sequences we’re surrounded by today and instead focuses on a night-long conversation. Two strangers meet on a train to Vienna and spend one night wandering around the city together before saying goodbye —that’s it, that’s the plot. Yet, the thought-provoking dialogue and the chemistry between the two main characters go beyond the cliché boy-meets-girl trope to capture the essence of making a genuine human connection.”

The Perfect Airplane Podcast

Dolly Parton's America

“I listen to Dolly Parton when I wake up in the morning, when I’m on the treadmill, when I’m finishing up assignments, and when I’m getting ready for a night out. I also binged this nine-episode personal, historical, and musical deep-dive into her reputation as a cultural icon during my last transatlantic flight, after mistakenly chugging an Americano in departures at the airport —and it did not disappoint.”
