Why Don't You...
The inimitable Diana Vreeland once said, “Fashion must be the most intoxicating release from the banality of the world.” The largely self-invented fashion editor, known for her very particular brand of whimsy, was a game-changer in the publication realm. She drove the likes of Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue out of the dark ages, with one of her most memorable contributions being her “Why Don’t You” column.First appearing in Harper’s Bazaar in 1936, the column was a celebration of originality and raised questions such as “Why don’t you…wash your blond child’s hair in dead champagne as they do in France?” and “Why don’t you…have a furry elk-kid trunk for the back of your car?” As opulent and ridiculous as some of Vreeland’s suggestions were, at their very core all of them shared one theme: Why don’t you do something different?Amidst hibernating at Stauffer, spending eternity in line at Tim Horton’s, and overindulging in sangria at QP, it can be very easy for us to get stuck in a rut. So in a similar vein to Vreeland’s column, why don’t you…Swap out your regular beanie for a punchier topper of the pom-pom variety?Add a dash of quirk to your look with a pair of dainty mismatched studs?Tuck your hair into a chunky scarf, with just a few strands falling out, for a touch of insouciance?Up the arm party by substituting your oversized menswear watch with a delicate, more feminine timepiece?
So make like Vreeland and change up your routine, however minor. After all, the only constant in fashion is that it is always changing. Yours creatively,Sanam Yar, Online ContributorImages: Pinterest, Tumblr
