Good Things Everyday

I challenge you to write. Write something good everyday.

Pick November and start writing one good thing that’shappened to you every day for the rest of the month. This ‘good thing’ can beanything really, something as simple as a smile you received from a stranger ora detail you enjoyed about the weather. I promise, this small task brings somuch positivity along with it.

Back in 2016 when I was a senior in high school, I washaving a really hard time and knew I needed to change something. So, I did. WhenJanuary 1st rolled around, I created a word document on my mac entitled “GoodThings Everyday”. I promised myself that every single day, I would force myselfto write down at least one thing that went well, no matter how small, to keepme from getting too down on myself.

Looking back now, 2017 was one of the best years of mylife, and I’m sure it’s because I made a point of noticing the good. When Ilook back at this word document I created, all I see are good memories. I nolonger weigh the little inconveniences so heavily, because I simply chose tostop focusing on them.

One truly beautiful thing that comes from practicing this is that often we will realize when we think we’re having bad days, we really aren’t. Often, we can allow simple 10-20-minute inconveniences to dictate our emotions for the rest of that day. When I slowly started to become more aware of my thoughts, I noticed how much I was letting the small things bother me, sometimes spanning as long as the week. I started to become so hyper-aware of my thoughts, I was actually able to decipher how my environment of emotions shaped my experiences.

When you force yourself, even on your worst days, tothink of at least one good thing that happened to you, you unconsciously filterout the bad and highlight the good. While I acknowledge that this exercise issimple, don’t be fooled into thinking that it’s easy. When forcing ourselves towrite something good, we might have a hard time. What’s important is that thegoal is to slowly see the bliss that comes from it. Shit happens to everyone, but it is up to you to decide how it will affect you.

This task proved to me that there is always some goodin every day and trust me when I say I continue to practice this now. Doingthis will prove that to you too. So, have it on your to-do list every day for amonth, you will start to see what I do (and before you know it, you will have 30days full of good things every day).
