Alice Merton on Navigating Adolescence
Canadian singer-songwriter Alice Merton has been making waves in the music industry this past year. With chart-topping hits like “Lash Out”, “Hit the Ground Running” and platinum single “No Roots” her debut album Mint set to release in 2019 is highly anticipated. Luckily, MUSE had the chance to sit down with Merton. We asked her as a young artist herself who had to navigate young adulthood while pursuing a creative career if she had any advice for aspiring artists -particularly those juggling school and their passion. Unsurprisingly, her advice was badass.
“I would say do what you feel is right – and don’t compromise for something that you feel, isn’t you. If something is really important to you and you really want to sing about it then you should. There are a lot of people out there that think “Well is anyone going to want to listen to a song about my feelings? Or is this even something anyone will care about?” The chances are there are many people who feel similar, which is something I’ve learned. Just do what you feel is best and don’t listen to others. You should always be receptive to
advice and opinions but at the end of the day you know that you are the one in charge of yourself, it’s your voice, you’re the one who is standing on stage singing your music and if you’re singing something you don’t feel you can relate to – is it really worth it?”
