The Return of Girls
Girls finally returned a few weeks ago after a nearly year long hiatus, and I’ve never been more excited to watch the train wreck that is the combination of Hannah, Marni, Jessa, and Shoshanna. If you’re on that very sad and very non inclusive of cable student budget like I am, you also have to wait until Monday mornings to watch the hot mess (I mean that with much love) that is Girls.If you’re new to the world of this HBO series, it essentially tells the story of four twenty-something year old girls trying to figure themselves out while living in New York. Creator, writer, producer, star, and all around female extraordinaire Lena Dunham, has created a witty formula for presenting viewers with the explosive reality of chaotic post-college living. Dunham play Hannah, an aspiring writer constantly teetering between feelings of conceit and complete self-destruction. Her on and off again relationship with equally off-kilter Adam (personally, my favourite character on the show) is both endearing, and so cringe worthy. Hannah’s best friend from college, Marni, makes me wince like no other. A girl who seemingly had it all at the start of the series (ie. a banging art gallery job, a devoted boyfriend, and admirable self confidence), has spiraled into definition of a hot mess by the beginning of the fourth season. As much as I root for her, and her aspirations of becoming a musician, all I can do whenever she starts to sing is burst into a giggle from all of her awkwardness. Plus, I don’t think anyone will forget Marni’s season four debut scene. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Take advantage of the slow start to the semester and catch up ASAP. Shoshanna is the most naïve of the characters. Essentially a caricature of a teenager in a young woman’s body, she takes viewers back to all the firsts they would have experienced during their own maturation. Jessa is the bohemian of the crew; her flirtations with dangerous situations, a short stint as a wife, recurring drug problem, and laissez-faire lifestyle provide a foil for the superficial rigidity of the other girls.Each girl has her flaws and redeemable traits, which creates for comedic situations based on raw thoughts and actions. Simultaneously hungry for stability, yet stuck in preconceived constructions of themselves, the girls’ approach to life is refreshingly naturalistic compared to all other television. A lack of divine interventions keeps it all rooted in reality and forces the girls to figure their own respective shit out.Girls makes you feel uncomfortable, pushes any boundaries set onto females, challenges the very definition of friendships and relationships, and shows the struggle of building a decent self esteem, all wrapped up with a charming, and expected narcissistic flair from the main four characters. It provides the most honest – and at times a touch over the stop – representation of a girl trying to transition into adulthood. No performance of emotion is left out, and Dunham embeds raw emotion, and experiences into the writing and performance of her highly decorated show. Like any HBO airing, this show is sprinkled with money shots, masturbation, and (very awkward) sex. Don’t let this scare you away; Girls is presented with such style, honesty, and quirk, both physically and emotionally, that viewers feel like they’re getting an omnipresent perspective into the lives of Hannah, Marni, Jessa, and Shoshi.I personally dig how chaotic Girls can be. As out of whack as certain situations seem in the show, they’re there to induce specific universal emotions to help us relate to the characters. Sometimes sex is awkward. Sometimes our closest friends turn out to be walking disasters. Work life is messy. Adult life is a shit show. Yet Girls manages to take all of these truths and put a comedic and philosophic spin on the disaster that is life.
