The Breakfast Club
With Halloweekend all wrapped up, I do my annual “I wish I was …” thinking, always regretting the last-minute costumes I pull together. Year after year, as a lover of all things John Hughes and 80s fashion, I dream about dressing up as his iconic characters. Duckie Dale, Ferris Bueller, or even his female counterpart Sloane Peterson; they’re all style icons in my eyes. This year marks the 30th anniversary of The Breakfast Club, so in honour of this cult classic, I’ve decided to delve into my closet and style modern takes on each member of the Brat Pack. These looks were an attempt at finding a balance between taking inspiration from each character while staying true to my day-to-day minimalistic style. I present to you The Breakfast Club : 2015 edition.1. The CriminalDoes anyone else ever feel the urge to walk across Tindall field, fist in the air, blasting “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” every time they throw on a denim jacket? No? Just me? Alright then. A denim jacket and a plain white tee can do wonders. Oh John Bender, you’ll never go out of style.2. The Basket CaseAll black and a basket case? It’s like the role was written for me. The great thing about black? Throw any black items of clothing together and you’ll look put together every time. Yes, even a dress over jeans with a pair of ratty old converses.3. The AthleteSporty chic and 90s logos are all the rage. Your favourite team’s jersey isn’t just for game time anymore. I’d also like to take this moment to give a quick shoutout to the Toronto Blue Jays for making the nation proud!4. The PrincessSleek. Effortless. Feminine with a touch of edgy ‘tude. Molly Ringwald perfectly encapsulated these qualities, and I can only hope my look touches on the confidence she represented.5. The BrainTake note of Brian’s practical sweater weather style. Throwing on your coziest turtleneck has never looked so cool. Trust me, even Drake took note in “Hotline Bling.”Feel free to take inspiration from any or even all of these looks. After all, “Each one of us is a brain, and an athlete, and a basket case, a princess, and a criminal.”Yours Creatively,Athena Fung, Online ContributorImages: Athena Fung
